Pick Plants That Won’t Hate You
I plant something, walk away, and come back to find it half-dead.
That’s on me. Not the plant.
Full sun means six hours of direct light. Not “some sun.” Not “morning light.” Six hours. If your spot gets less, don’t waste time on lavender or tomatoes.
Try hostas or ferns instead. (They’ll actually live.)
Soil matters more than you think. Clay holds water like a sponge (great) for astilbe, terrible for lavender. Sandy soil dries out fast (good) for sedum, bad for most perennials.
Most plants want loam. If yours isn’t loam, test it before you buy.
Size at maturity? I ignored this once. Planted a ninebark three feet from the porch.
Now it’s a shrub-sized wall. You’ll regret it too if you skip this step.
Maintenance is real. You say “low effort” (but) do you mean it? Or are you just tired today?
Lantana blooms all summer with zero help. Hydrangeas need pruning, watering, pH tweaks. Be honest.
Disease-resistant varieties exist. Use them. ‘Knock Out’ roses won’t get black spot. ‘Defiant’ tomatoes shrug off blight. Skip the fragile ones unless you enjoy spraying fungicide every Tuesday.
Mix textures, colors, heights (or) everything looks flat. Think spiky yucca next to soft lamb’s ear next to tall coneflowers. It’s not decoration.
It’s survival. Plants support each other.

Soil Is Not Just Dirt
I used to think soil was just dirt you stuck plants in.
Wrong.
Healthy soil feeds roots. Holds water. Lets air in.
It’s the foundation. Not optional.
You test it. A $10 kit tells you pH and missing nutrients. Skip this step and you’re guessing.
Badly.
Compost fixes most problems. Not magic (but) close. I dump it on top and let worms do the work.
(They’re better at digging than I am.)
Raised beds? Yes. If your ground is clay, sand, or full of rubble.

Over-tilling kills life. Fungi. Earthworms.

Water Right or Watch Them Wilt
I water my plants like they’re people. Not too much. Not too little.
Just enough.
Water deeply. Let it soak down past the top inch. Shallow watering makes roots lazy.

Water early. Morning is best. Less evaporation.
Less fungal drama. I skip midday (water) just steams off. And evening?
Too damp for too long. Fungus loves that.
Stick your finger in. Two inches deep. If it’s dry, water.
If it’s cool or sticky, wait. Don’t guess. Feel it.
Plants need food too. Nitrogen for leaves. Phosphorus for roots and flowers.
Potassium for strength and stress resistance. They don’t need all three all the time. A tomato plant wants more phosphorus when it starts blooming.
A lettuce plant wants more nitrogen while it’s growing fast.
I use compost tea or a balanced granular fertilizer. Nothing fancy. Nothing synthetic unless I have to.
You’ll get green chaos and zero tomatoes.
Over-fertilizing? It burns roots. It makes plants grow leaves instead of fruit.
This isn’t magic. It’s observation. It’s timing.
